I've been on the road eight days now, and by fan request, I will be keeping a tab on beard growth. Thus begins the first installment of beard-watch '09.
On a separate note, here are a few thoughts from the road that I forgot to put in my earlier posts.
1. I've never seen so many grandparents in leather as at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
2. As part of experiencing the country via the back roads, I hoped to eat some good road food along the way. So far, with the exception of the Elk burger last night, I've been disappointed. Twice now I've been to little roadside cafes only to find regular groceries on the menu. In Belle Fourche, SD, the menu of Bob's Cafe had soup and freely admitted it was Campbell's. In Havre, MT today, I stopped at 4B's for lunch. While a ham sandwich with a side of mac & cheese is no one's idea of daring, I would expect the mac & cheese not to be Kraft. I understand wanting to keep things inexpensive, but jesus! Campbell's and Kraft are what I make for myself when I'm too lazy to make something better. And it's not like soup and mac & cheese are difficult or complicated or require exotic ingredients. Not an auspicious start. Time to step up your game America!
3. Also, on things you don't want in a restaurant, here's something you don't want to overhear your server tell another server: "I've got the biggest canker sore." Gross. I'm sure it's awful. I'm also sure that the other server doesn't want to hear about it. And I'm doubly sure none of the patrons want to know.
