Day 10 - Glacier National Park

So I got up super early again. At least today I wasn't driving anywhere. I could use the time to explore the park. I started by driving down to Lake McDonald, where I found it beautifully calm. The weather wasn't 100% cooperative; a fair amount of haze lingered after the early morning fog.

Next I went to the top of Logan Pass to go for a short hike (6 miles round trip).

Note the ripples in the rock in the foreground of the picture below. This is the remnants of an ancient seafloor. Think about the small ripples you see in the sand under the water at your favorite beach. That's what this is, only at about 7000 feet above sea level

Speaking of 7000 feet above sea level, doing this hike which had a total elevation gain and loss of 1000 vertical feet reminded me that I've been living at sea level too long and can't breathe in the mountains. That and that I'm out of shape.

I have several pictures of mountain goats because they seem completely at ease with people being around. They hang out right next to the trail, even with their babies, and barely notice your presence. I like this photo because it shows them in their natural habitat.

After the hike, I went back to Lake McDonald and took an hour cruise around the lake. The wind had picked up by then, so the water was rather choppy. But that did nothing to dampen the experience. Positively, the cruise afforded me new angles from which to photograph the mountains.

And I got to see new wildlife. We spotted two bald eagles.

One more day in the park!
